A two decade dance. Though Blonde Redhead span 21 years, for me the dance began one Sonic Youth obsessed autumn whilst still at school. From the pool of associations Last.
But first we have some brilliant support in the guise of The Double, who produce some stunning art-rock to open the night. Their atmospheric, gothic sound is equal parts Interpol, the Flaming Lips and Stereolab, with some driving organ and echoing guitar. Driven by tom toms and some brilliant experimentation, it builds to a shimmering, awesome crescendo of a finale.
Could we be seeing a resurgence of interest in the once-maligned indie subgenre of shoegazing? Taken in isolation, a respectable turnout at a large venue for the New Yorkers Blonde Redhead hardly seals the matter. Music historians may have us believe that, in the s, you heard guitars only on grunge or Britpop records.
There could hardly be a venue more befitting a band like Blonde Redhead 's very gradual shift along the musical spectrum than Islington Assembly Hall, which was host this week to a show that saw Kazu Makino, Amadeo and Simone Pace hold the audience's attention for the duration. Much of the performance comprised of songs from Barriganthe band's latest full-length effort and a quite a different, quieter affair. But the softer, more minimal tones were interspersed here and there with snippets from 23 and Misery Is A Butterflyall of which went down exceptionally well with the crowd: a false start and a quick apology at the beginning of "Falling Man" was, for example, met with enthusiastic encouragement.
Material from this period is often thought of as the highlight of the bands career, appearing on high profile series such as British teen soap Skins and U. Tracks such as "23" and "SW" gauged the biggest reaction from the crowd, instantly recognizable. Likewise, the band themselves seemed to engage deeply with these tracks, coming from a period of a heavier, more droning, guitar based sound, a slight departure from their earlier work more fitting with their common label of dream pop.
